Online casino games
Among the games offered by online casinos blackjack takes up a prominent place, and rightfully so, as there probably isn't a single brick and mortar casino that doesn't have this popular cardgame on offer.
Since online casinos emulate the functioning and the atmosphere of a real casino it's only natural that they include everything a real casino offers into their selection of games.
But let us take a closer look on blackjack today. I bet few people know that blackjack is also called twenty-one and even fewer that Pontoon is what it's called in certain places.
The popularity blackjack enjoys nowadays is largely due to the fact that people see it as the perfect cardgame that can be exploited via the use of different skills ( cardcounting) and though luck plays a major part in this game, skill can be a determining factor in it too.
Originating from France the game wasn't as popular at all when first introduced in America, as a matter of fact it had such a meager following that casinos had to offer special bonuses in order to lure people to the tables.
One such interesting bonus offer was to give a 10 to one bonus payout to the person presenting an ace and either the jack of clubs or the jack of spades ( one of the 'black jacks"). Though later the bonus was no longer awarded, the name 'black-jack' stuck to the game to this very day.
The rules of the game are quite simple, and probably this too is a factor why it became so popular on such a short notice. One doesn't need a bachelor's degree to learn to play this game, and a good memory is all that's needed to master basic card-counting techniques, though the casinos have already devised methods to neutralize such attempts.
The winner's hand needs to be as close to twenty-one as possible ( preferably exactly 21) without actually exceeding it. If the value of a player's hand exceeds 21 he's out of the game. ( this is called a 'bust' in blackjack slang) All the cards ( from 2 to 10 ) possess the values written on them, all high cards ( like K, Q, J, ) count as 10, and the aces count as 11 or 1. If the ace counted as 11 would make a player's hand exceed 21 it'll be counted as 1.
An interesting situation arises when the hand a player holds has an ace in it ( be that a single ace or one coupled with any other card.) in this situation it is practically impossible for him to bust by drawing another card. These are called 'soft hands' in blackjack lingo.
Whoever has a blackjack ( ace + ten or a jack) automatically wins the game in case the opponent doesn't have blackjack. If they both have blackjacks then it's a push.
In casinos and in online blackjack people will find that the dealer deals himself ( and everyone else) two cards, one of his own cards will be turned face up so everyone can see it the other will remain face down as the hole-card for the game.
After having their hands dealt players can undertake one of the following actions: Hit – they'll take another card to make their hand stronger. This is a common option, however by busting on the hand the player loses the bet even if the dealer goes on to bust too. Stand – take no more cards an take on the dealers hand with whatever's on store. Split – count each one of two ( only same value) cards as the starting card of two new hands.
Double down – this means the player will double the bet take a card and then stand. Quite a risky option, but certain hands justify making this move.
There is also one other option the player can choose, but it's not allowed in most casinos any more. It's called Surrender, and it means that in case of a truly hopeless hand, the player would surrender half the bet, and get the chance to have a new hand dealt.
